gration Ordinance No. 37 of 1901.
I am further to explain that on the analogy of the
provisions of the Consular Fee Table, which prescribes
special additional fees for work done out of office
hours, or on Sundays and holidays, at the request of
the parties interested, a charge has been customary for
overtime as well as for attendance on Sundays and holi-
days. This is at present in the nature of a voluntary
payment and has not been uniform in amount.
I am to state for the information of the Earl of
Elgin that Sir Edward Grey concurs in the views ex-
pressed by Sir John Jordan with regard to the increas-
ingly arduous character of the duties of Emigration
officers, and in the recommendation made by him that
their remuneration should be increased, and that a uni-
form scale of fees should be created which should be
applicable equally to British and foreign emigrant ves-
sels.
I am to suggest therefore that the Immigration
Ordinance of the Straits Settlements No. 19 of July 25th
1902 should be amended by the provision of a Fee for
